Come join our Head Start Team as a Bus Driver, supporting Educational Opportunities for Children & Families realize a common mission by providing safe, timely, and efficient transportation for staff, children and families served by EOCF. This benefited position is classified as temporary, part-time, budgeted for 1575 hours/196 day per year, and will be scheduled to work 35 hours per week during the school year, with a starting wage of $18.11 per hour.

Position open until filled.

Education: High school diploma/equivalent.

Experience: One year experience in public or student transportation is preferred. Past or current EOCF-served parents may use documented volunteer service as experience.

Willing to train the right candidate.

*** Bi-lingual skills highly desired (Spanish - English).

Certification and Other Requirements

Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class "C" or better with passenger and school bus endorsements. This includes meeting all Washington State Department of Transportation physical requirements as stipulated in Section 391.41 of the Commercial Drivers Manual.

Valid First Aid and CPR cards.

Valid Oregon or Washington State driver's license, a record of no DWI convictions or other violations which have resulted in the suspension or revocation of a driver's license in the preceding five years, and proof of automobile insurance as mandated by Washington State law.

Ready access to a personal, legally licensed motor vehicle.

Completion of EOCF's in-service driver training program.

Submit to finger printing and criminal history background check.

Pass a pre-employment health screening indicating freedom from communicable diseases, and an annual health checkup indicating freedom from communicable diseases.

Pass pre-employment drug screening, and subsequent random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol screenings as required by federal law.

Commit to EOCF's drug-free work place policy.

Knowledge of:

Federal and State laws, regulations, codes, policies and procedures regarding school bus safety operation.

Principles of young child, individual and group, management in a school bus environment.

Basic rules and principles of grammar, written and verbal communication, and mathematics.

Ability to:

Operate a type A school bus.

Construct, revise and maintain bus routes.

Manage children, ages three to five, in a school bus, utilizing the assistance of parents and bus monitor as appropriate.

Work independently and make sound decisions (according to agency policies, state & federal laws and regulations), meet deadlines and work effectively under stressful or emergent conditions.

Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness as work demands shift; may be asked to work any day of the work week.

Maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Work cooperatively with other staff members and with clients from diverse cultural, socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

Use the team approach to resolving problems or conflicts.

Demonstrate professional and effective verbal communication skills; receive information and feedback in an understanding manner; use good judgment.

Attend appropriate staff meetings and out-of-town training sessions as assigned.

Interact and communicate effectively with groups of parents and children while under a tight time schedule.

Demonstrate effective leadership at all times while on bus route.

Accept responsibility for seeking assistance and guidance when needed; incorporate constructive direction from supervisor to improve job performance.

Key Performance Area: Transportation

Perform complete and thorough daily pre-trip exterior/interior vehicle inspection. Report equipment concerns to the supervisor immediately.

Ensure that each child is seated in an appropriate child restraint systems at all times during transportation.

Coordinate children and family safety with emphasis on loading and unloading procedures at bus stops and classroom center.

Transport children and staff in a safe, timely and efficient manner, and in accordance with federal and state laws and EOCF policies.

Provide complete, accurate and timely reports of bus routes and equipment as required by the Supervisor.

Learn and implement all EOCF policies, not limited to transportation.

Implement emergency safety and response procedures as prescribed.

Properly store all baggage and other items transported in the passenger area.

Drive from home to assigned point(s) to pick up bus.

Key Performance Area: Communications

Instruct children and families on safe bus riding practices, safety procedure for boarding and leaving the bus including crossing the street to and from the bus stops, recognition of danger loading zones around the bus, including participating in an emergency evacuation drill conducted on the bus the child will be riding.

Conduct additional two bus evacuation drills annually.

Participate in bus monitor training.   

Assure consistent, accurate and timely flow of verbal and written information to and from other staff, supervisor, program participants, and community.

Conduct all communication with staff, supervisor, program participants, and community in an effective, respectful, timely, and supportive manner.

Prepare and provide timely and accurate written reports, memoranda and other statistical and narrative information as required or requested.

Maintain organized and accessible record keeping and filing system.

Serve as advocate for EOCF and its families in the community.

Maintain confidentiality of program, staff and client information.

Key Performance Area: Vehicle Maintenance

Clean bus seats, windows, dash board, and floor on a daily basis.

Clean exterior on a regular and consistent basis.

Complete systematic preventative vehicle maintenance.
